About Us
We are Nancy and Oelando Baker, co-owners of Good Gifts Naturally.
After raising two wonderful children and pursuing careers as teachers for many years, we wanted to find a way to continue to do meaningful work as we moved
closer to those golden retirement years. Articles on micro-loans for women in third world countries and news stories on non-profit groups bringing handmade
fair trade items to US markets intrigued us with the notion that even on a small scale, there were ways for folks like us to truly touch other's lives, making a difference.
By shopping fair trade, by valuing the products created by the entrepreneur/ small business owner on the other side of the world, consumers in "better-off" places could
make huge statements of caring and affect a great difference in the financial and emotional well-being of the artisan, their family and their community.
We started off by creating a small online store while we still lived in Connecticut and Nancy continued working as a third grade teacher. Oelando was the sole full time
visionary and business man for Good Gifts Naturally (at that time called Gifts for Grants). During those years we made personal connections with non-profit groups such
as Mercado Global in New Haven CT to sell fair trade products. Using our small profits we offered school grants to local schools as well as awarding scholarships to
young Guatemalan students.
In our continuing effort to make a difference globally, we partnered with other fair trade organizations that worked with artisans from around the world.
“Fair trade” means that these artisans are paid a fair wage for their work and time. Most artisans are given at least 50% of the material and production costs up front. The
organizations additionally help improve the working and living conditions of the artisans and families.
A number of our fair trade, non-profit organization allies concentrate their efforts on women artisans. They passionately believe when women have an income, they reinvest
in themselves and in their children’s health, education and nutrition, building stronger families and communities over time. We support this economic strategy.
Many of the non-profits that we work with share our focus on improving school systems, and ensuring that parents can afford to send their children to school.
This partnership effectively compounds our mutual impact on this crucial issue. Strategic investment in the early education of our children is a simple but
important step in making the world a better place.
Later once we both "retired", we relocated to Arizona to be closer to family. With both of us able to work on our business (now called Good Gifts Naturally)
full time we began to expand from not only offering fair trade items but gifts handmade by social enterprise groups in the United States which offer business training and
life counseling to women in need. Recently we have expanded our product lines to offer not only fair trade international gift items, but organic gift baskets as well as
handmade gifts created by local AZ, US and Canadian small business entrepreneurs.
As owners of Good Gifts Nataurally, we personally search for the best quality, truly unique and beautiful gift items to offer our customers. Being members of Green
America we make sure that the items are eco-friendly and sustainably made, pet friendly, and are certified fair trade and organic.
In our spare time of which there does not seem to be that much, we volunteer with a local golden retriever rescue group, pamper and spoil our senior adopted golden, and
love to take trips to the beach or to go hiking with our dog, Mugs.
