Approx 8-9 inches Across X 5-6 inches Tall (plus handle of leather) These beautiful baskets are hand woven in Ghana from native elephant grass straw. They are approximately 8 - 9 inches across and 5 - 6inches deep. Each is a perfect size for a make your own gift basket creation or to display on a coffee table or shelf. Every basket is unique which means no two designs or color scheme are the same. The baskets are exclusively woven by the indigenous Frafra people of a historical town in Northern Ghana called Bolgatanga. The weaving group has a mission: to assist the poor rural women of Northern Ghana in earning decent incomes from the fruits of their labors in order to care for their children. We believe when the woman can create an income, the trickle-down effect puts food into the bowl of a child, and is a way of promoting self-esteem for the women, children and village.
Weavers in the Bolgatana region of Northern Ghana create these useful and beautiful baskets under Fair Trade guidelines. The limitless supply of tall veta vera grass grows in the regions nearby. The top of the grass stalks grows with broom-like flowers (similar to wheat) that are removed for weaving, leaving the stalk intact. Easily reshape your basket by quickly submerging it in water, reshaping by hand and letting it dry. The addition of leather to many baskets adds durability.
