Details
These cards are made in Kisumu, Kenya which has long been known for artisans who make products from "easily obtained materials", a nice way of saying "trash". Whether it's making card adornments including their signature "dancing girls" from recycled wire from car engines and tim cans or colorful painted tin plates from sheets of misprinted bottle caps, the artisans present a whimsical view of Kenyan life.
Challenge yourself to recycle the product on the card. Remove the tin piece and attach a magnet or use it as a bookmark ( and check out the bottle cap design on the back).
Fair trade and recycled. It just doesn't get any better.
Meet the artisans -- TEMAK, The Teenage Mothers and Girls Association of Kenya, trains young women in lifeskills necessary to suport temselves and their families. One of the many skills is craft-making from readily available materials including wire and tin.
The organization also opens international markets to other artisans in the town of Kisumu, who previously relied on the tourists visiting Lake Victoria. These artisans share their skills with the young women of TEMAK turning Kisumu into a true artisan enclave.
